SPAIN TO THE CARIBBEAN VIA FRANCE, ITALY AND AFRICA:
OVERVIEW

Spain to the Americas - sound familiar? Well if Columbus could do it with his old wooden ships we should sail in style on our lovely new school-ship schooner S/Y Argo.

Interactive Brochure ImageArrive and get to know your fellow crew after storing away your sea bag and learning some of the basic vessel operations on the first day aboard. The Barcelona docks are right downtown so grab a buddy and wonder through the boulevards and narrow streets packed with people. We will soon be down to just our crew as we round the breakwater bound for the south coast of France. Marseilles, St. Tropez, Cannes, Nice, Cap d'Antibes, Monaco - all provide a quiet anchorage and different perspectives of the French Riviera so we'll visit the coastal ports before hoisting the mainsail and plotting a course to Portofino in Italy.

No Italian tourist guide of the Italian waters has ever been published without a photo of Portofino it seems. Just so quaint a port, yet there are more such as the Cinque Terra and Porto Venere that are just as beautiful so we'll soak in them all. Then South once again to Elba where Napoleon was exiled for a stopover enroute to Civitavecchia. Rome can not be missed so we'll take time to visit the major sights before turning our bow in a Westerly direction that we will keep for the rest of the voyage.

Stops along the way interrupt our studies just long enough to sail in and visit the following places -

  • Porto Cervo, Sardegna - where the jet set play every summer
  • Bonafaccio, Corsica - where the cliffside town has streets so narrow you can touch both sides at the same time
  • Mahon, Menorca - where the chef of Cardinal Richelieu invented mayonnaise when supplies were running low during a siege
  • Palma de Mallorca - another yachting capital of the Mediterranean
  • Cartegena, Spain - where we will drive up to Grenada to see the city started by the moors juxtaposed by the harsh architecture of the anglo Saxons placed nearby.
  • Gibraltar - The Pillars of Hercules and gateway to the Atlantic
  • Safi, Morocco - to see a typical seaport
  • Agadir - To ride camels on the beach after bargaining in the souk
  • Canary Islands - Spanish departure point for Columbus
  • Cape Verde Islands - This is optional depending on timing and weather
  • Devil’s Island - famous as the most notorious French Penal Colony off the coast of French Guyana, South America

And finally, with the Atlantic to our stern, we'll arrive into the Caribbean at Grenada, completing our academic studies, sail training and scuba certifications as we head north through the Tobago Keys, past Martinique, Dominica and Guadeloupe to our final destination of the British Virgin Islands.
